Space Invaders was the first game that saved high scores for long periods of time. Made it a lot easier to keep track of your scores and those of your buddies too. Made us want to come back and play again because arcade games prior to Space Invaders by and large were based on time rather than individual skills. It was something very unique at the time.

I agree with your conclusions about "X-com 2". I like the missions that are on a timer and how you have to find certain people or objects. I also like the limited resources, which force the player to make certain decisions. On the other hand, in UFO Defense there was no hand holding. There was no path to follow. The only story was in the manual. One had to be smart enough to read the manual and in game information to know that you had to identify and capture certain aliens. It really was better. There are aspects of the newer ones that I think are ok too, but there is no substitute for the original.

This was the zenith of the line, IMHO.

I loved heroes 7. The multiplayer game experience was a disaster. It's no surprise comming from Ubisoft, I was really disappointed.

ah man, it's not looking that good for the campaing. Maybe they simply waited too long while everyone was throwing millions at critical role et al.

It's good and bad on both "sides". When i think of very early stages of gaming develooment the first time i would consider few games really good would be with the NES, but i'm talking about only a couple of titles, and good in a sense "for their aim". You can think of game as being "10/10" or near perfect, or just great, overall or within it's smaller aim. Tetris is almost perfect, but i would argue for a quick puzzle game, i wouldn't compare it to Baldur's Gate 2. I think first major rush of actually great game came with SNES/Genesis (and TG16 to a point), these games have perfected almost 2d visuals, arcade gameplay also reached it's peak (or rather adulthood), JRPG's from that period were often ambitious and really well done, we had many great platformers, shmups and so on. But on the other hand good racing games were almost an alien concept, sports games sucked, and we haven't yet really tried many generes. PSX/N64/Saturn era was a tremedous push, when it comes to technology and design (in large part thanks to psx reaching for more mature and more developed content), but the implementation most of the time lacked more than just a polish - unlike SNES/Genesis, many good back then titles if remade today would be changed quite a bit, while games from generation earlier would find home as a good indie release nowadays. Obviously there were games that aged well overall like Super Mario 64 (as impressive as ever), or Gran Turismo 2 (which would only need a slight graphical update). 6th Generation for me repeats the feat of 4th - PS2/Xbox/GC/DC had so many great games, that shown professionalism, pasion, and idea guiding creators, that in my opinion vast majority of great games form back then (as well as countles more mediocre titles), could be released today, at best with improved visuals. Yeah open worlds were simplistic, and we've only tasted more cinematic games, but genres like racing, extreme sports, fighting games, 3d platformers, action adventure, fps, rpg (non open world, or with some limitations), classic sports, tps, strategy - they had achived maturity. 7th gen for me does 4 things, it introduces more cinematic games (with good and bad), it introduces net play in it's best form (from which gaming will decline later), it makes massive improvements in open world games (evolution that will be done around next generation), and it looks for different means of showing types of games that already were good. 8th gen did not offer much apart form further improvements in open worlds, but it had sizeable libraries with good games, sadly we also started a dive in poor practices in monetizing games. Current gen seems like a strong decline, but it's balanced by booming indie scene that seems like a rebirth of AA gaming scene, that gave 6th gen so much diversity. And also emulation becomes really professional, and it no longer feels like working on a garage project. So gaming is great still, even if some things are concerning, and old games were good also, regardless of nostalgia. You just have to know which games are you looking for - a fan of tactical shooters, well Sega Genesis won't do, but if you like run 'n gun then you're set!

I hated it when it came out because it was so different than 2. But I went back and replayed it a couple years ago and that I still hate it.

I loved this game. I played it many times over. However, Summoner 2 was my first recollection of a sequel that totally dismantles the first game..which kinda sucked.

Gameplay is a bit janky today. Art style, though, keeps its importance.

It feels like people changed in company, or some new came. They experimented with their ideas on existing franchise with almost complete disregard to meta. They didn't transition to the new world as they did all the time with Might & Magic series. They wiped the previous world. Then they continued to wipe recognizable figures from the previous world. It's like some new mentality took over. It changed style as well. From slick marble of previous installments to rough texture of Heroes 4 and Might & Magic IX.

For me this was the best in the series. Mai e also because it was the firs i played. Graphics is my all time favorite.😊

GOG are charging more than double (actually closer to x8 at the time of writing) for the Gold Edition than Ubisoft are for the History Edition. Worthless? No, more like hyperbole on your behalf...

8 years after this excellent video was uploaded, Daggerfall Unity has been fully released, along with a myriad of incredible mods. And so now it truly is, in my opinion, the greatest Bethesda game of all time.

The game had an instory reason for the mixture of sci fi and medieval settings: All these "planets" of M&M 1-8 were all virtual worlds of an old big colony ship, that had gone rogue over millenia. The ancients had made this ship to bring their people to a new home after their old one was destroyed. And for the people inside the ship to stay alive they got attached to the ship Matrix-style and lived their lifes in the worlds they wanted to, some chosed more sci-fi worlds, some worlds of ancient times (MM3 was such a planet) some preferred mideval worlds etc. But then Sheltem, who is a crazy manifested AI in a robot, took over some of the worlds and started crashing them into each other, killing the people who lived on that worlds. So in MM1 a party on such a doomed planet got out to fight Sheltem. MM2 too. Sheltem always was able to flee to another world. And in MM4 he had crashed on Xeen and started his typical schenanigans there. Xeen was also already quite corrupted, as the AI of the ship had mixed up Sci-Fi and medieval theses into this world. That's by the way also the reason, why you are allowed to kill most of the inhabitants of the AI - they are not real people. Only the normal NPcs who give you quests are real - and you cannot kill them therefore - but all the monsters are just invented by the AI.

...i dont mind when a game locks content so you play to unlock. Classes like bioware did in dragon age origins, characthers like in fighting games, aoe3 with the cards... But behind a pay wall? No

I, for one, am enjoying this game. Watched s lot of homm videos lately. Spent more than a healthy amount of hours on homm2 3, and 4. Just wish people would take off their nostalgia glasses and recognise that Homm3 was as much broken as the Ubisoft titles. At least they continued the franchise, unlike ea with their bullfrog acquisition.

While it looks great remastered, it wasn't that bad to begin with considering how old it is.

I once went deep on ships, cloaking, and stellar manipulation, and after hundreds of turns of war on the edges of my empire, I demanded that all other species surrender. Next turn, only one surrendered, all the rest denied. Next turn, all the stars in the galaxy owned by those that didn't surrender went supernova and obliterated all my enemies. Of course, I had the tech to recondense stars and rebuild planets, so free realestate, so hahahaha

the heroes online title came out before this video was made. it was a browser based thing, and started with only two factions. the haven or life and necro or death sides. there were other creatures from what would be described as other factions, but they were not playable as a regular faction dwelling. just an off chance of recruiting a small amount from a random dwelling if your faction had not had that dwelling claimed by another player in X amount of time before returning to "neutral"
